Her third story finds plucky Cat Royal, disguised as a ballerina, in France reporting on La révolution. When her friends are thrown in prison, Cat must use her considerable street skills, connections, and audacity to secure their release. Cat's larger-than-life spunkiness supplies the engine for this fast-paced adventure. The general period atmosphere remains strong, as does Cat's ability to relate to people.

Cat Royal, spunky adventurer, takes to the high seas when she and Frank, Earl of Arden, are press-ganged into the Royal Navy. The contrived plot includes Cat being accused of murder and held hostage, and a section in which Cat is adopted into a Native American tribe seems dropped in. Nevertheless, fans of Cat's hyper-gutsy style will find enjoyment in this fast-paced tale.

A plantation owner demands the return of Cat Royal's friend Pedro to slavery in the colonies. An altercation leading to assault charges against Cat takes her out of the hunt when Billy "Boil" kidnaps Pedro. Cat's outsize personality, scrappy and cunning, enlivens each page. A similarly vivid supporting cast in a setting rich with period details rounds out this whirlwind romp. Glos.

Orphan Catherine "Cat" Royal lives in the Theater Royal. She helps the theater owner protect a "diamond" he's hiding but soon realizes he's concealing something else. Meanwhile, Cat and Pedro, a musical prodigy and former slave, are also embroiled in a street-gang rivalry. Golding situates her story precisely; often a few deft words bring the setting into satisfying, sharp focus.

Companions Quartet series.
This first installment introduces Connie Lionheart, a teenager tied by her animal communication skill to an ancient society devoted to protecting mythical creatures. Connie's first challenge is to shield a group of sirens from an overzealous oil company. Though the book's a bit preachy, its ecological bent grounds this fantasy in today's reality.
