A little girl first announces the coming of twilight to a city street then takes off for the sky to handle twilight tasks: reading a bedtime story to the setting sun and scolding an owl for waking up too soon. The pacing is slow, and the conceit that the girl is the "keeper of twilight" is never explained, but McPhail's rich, color-drenched watercolors bring on night with a flourish.

In a tale from the Scandinavian tradition, Vanishia, the daughter of the moon, rejects the fiery son of the sun and marries one of the Brothers of the Northern Lights, bringing the sun's vengeance upon herself and her husband. Luminous watercolors in contrasting blue and yellow tones with strong lines sweeping across wide skies lend a dreamy quality to this tragic tale.
